LGBTQ FERTILITY PROGRAM INSTRUCTORS
Dr. Teresa Evans ND, LM, RN
I graduated from Bastyr University as a Naturopathic Physician and Licensed Midwife in 2007 and from Seattle University with my nursing degree in 2014. I will be finishing my Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse Midwifery degrees in August of 2016. For over 10 years I have been supporting hundreds of patients towards healthy conceptions, families, and births. Before going to medical school, I worked in social services and as a massage therapist. I have a passion for making a positive impact on my community by assisting individuals towards finding their truest brilliant selves in order to support them in making their own unique powerful positive impacts on society. In this way, I believe health-care can be a place of political action. Stemming from my deep appreciation for the powerful miracle of labor and birth, comes my awe towards fertility and conception. I find amazing joy and excitement while supporting families towards pregnancy. In addition, I feel deeply motivated to support lgbtq families and non-traditional families (such as single-moms-by-choice) towards joyful parenting. I believe that creating a healthy family is a human right. I want to work towards decreasing economic barriers and health obstacles to this right, especially barriers that exist solely because of one's sexual orientation, gender identification, or family-creation choices. This motivates me to create affordable classes and programs to empower non-traditional families to enjoy an affordable and efficient path to pregnancy. In private practice I use a variety of safe natural treatments that support the body's amazing ability to heal itself such as herbs, homeopathy, cranio-scaral therapy, massage, and nutrition. As a midwife, I also specialize in pregnancy and postpartum depression because of my love for pregnancy and babies and my passion for mood support that is safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding. My goal is to educate and empower my patients so that they will no longer need visits with me on a regular basis. I am a seeker of joy and health. I love reading books about heart-centered living and finding our purpose in life. The multitude of perspectives on the purpose of life fascinate me and I draw from those truths when supporting my patients. Before becoming a doctor and midwife, I started off as a massage therapist and doula. I then worked as a social worker in crisis centers, psychiatric group homes, and homeless shelters and I deeply enjoyed being of service to the amazing women that live in shelters and group homes. As a naturopathic physician, I additionally specialize in gynecology, maternity care, LGBTQ primary care, gender-affirming medicine, fertility, inseminations, mood support, and gastrointestinal disorders. My other passions include playing flute in the Rainbow City Band, gardening, hiking, horse-back riding, movies, books, world travel, and making inspirational artwork/t-shirts/stickers. I believe that joy and health should be easy and fun to create. Although they do require 100% commitment to change and have times of pain and challenge, fun and easy should be the predominant experience. I strive to offer tools to my patients to help them access the easy fun ways of living life fully. I am based in Seattle and am happy to offer phone consultations for non-local individuals. Dr. Tamar Blau ND
I am a Naturopathic Doctor with a degree from Bastyr University. As a naturopathic doctor, my goal is to provide the best health care possible for each individual patient. My education has given me many tools to employ, including the use of botanical medicines, homeopathic remedies, nutrients, diet modification, pharmaceuticals and lifestyle changes. Since the essence of this medicine is to treat each person as an individual, and to treat to the root cause, no two patients will have the same experience. However every patient will be involved in his or her own healing; the word doctor comes from the word "docere", which means "to teach". Therefore, my job as a doctor is to educate each patients so that he or she can make an informed decision about his or her own health. I focus on primary care and preventative medicine, working with patients to optimize their health and avoid illness. I love working with children; by focusing on health at such a young age these children will have improved health throughout their lives. However the ultimate preventative medicine starts before birth, even before conception, by working with parents to create an optimal environment in which to bring a child to life. For mothers who will be conceiving that includes addressing any health concerns, and creating a vibrant healthy womb. However it also includes the emotional and spiritual health of any parents involved in bringing a child into the world. When working toward fertility and conception there are a lot of choices to be made by potential parents. The wealth of information and options available when starting a family may feel daunting. So my focus is to educate each patient on the tools available, helping him or her to navigate a path that is both comfortable and effective. This is a path that I have walked myself. When, five years ago, my partner and I decided that we were ready to have a child, we spent months navigating the pros and cons of different methods of starting our own family. In the end we decided to use artificial insemination, and I carried the baby. We are now fortunate to be the mothers of an amazing little boy. The experience has helped me to understand the physical and emotional ups and downs of going through this process, from preconception, to conception, to pregnancy, to birth and through motherhood. When I'm not working with patients to improve their lives, I can be found digging in my garden, working in my kitchen on new ways to introduce healthy foods to my family, or engaged in a game of dress up with my son. I serve on the board of my son's preschool as the chair of the health advisory committee, through which my goal is to help other parents get the tools they need to optimize their family's health.
